In my previous message I mentioned a discrepancy in the ship’s biomass, but disregarded the reading. I should’ve paid more attention. If I had followed up on it, we would have discovered the dodos before we’d passed the point of no return. I blame myself for us having to deal with them for the duration of the voyage.

Somehow, they’d gotten into Samantha’s lab equipment for the research she’ll do on Mars to (hopefully) find traces of Martian life. Once the container was closed, all subsequent scanning read them as packing foam. They were loaded on the shuttle, luckily in the section containing breathable air.
They stretched out the food and water they brought to last until they were found. Now they’re our responsibility.
Otherwise, everything is going smoothly. That’s a big “Otherwise” however.
